[ After having gotten over the shock of... Well, everything, and after having herself a good cry, Lirael examined the journal she'd found next to her neatly folded clothes.

It seemed like it had to be magical, and yet she could feel nothing from it. Was it dangerous? It didn't seem like it. Just strange.

Hence, after having read a few entries and come to the conclusion that this had to be some kind of communication device, she tentatively wrote: ]

[ Lirael, master of diplomacy and smooth social interaction. ]

[ It's tempting to say "Daughter of the Clayr", or perhaps even "Abhorsen-in-waiting", but from what that guide told her those titles don't really mean anything here, and besides this could all be some sort of really strange and elaborate set-up. Best be cautious about revealing things. ]

Are you from the Old Kingdom?

[Simple and blunt. Best way to ask a sensitive question like that]

[ She really, really wishes the Dog could be here with her. It wouldn't even be all that bad if she had been, apart from the fact that it was keeping her from what she had to do back home. That would still have been bad of course, but she wouldn't have been this scared. ]

Yes.

[That helps. Another question, this one...equally blunt]

Do you know Sabriel Abhorsen?

No.

But I know who she is.

[ No need to mention the whole "she's my sister" bit. ]

You're in luck. She's here as well.

[Wow.]

[ HOW IS THAT LUCKY? The Abhorsen away from the Old Kingdom at a time like this? Disaster! ]

That's not lucky.

Do you know her?

I do. She is a dear friend, and she stays with me at present.

You do not need to worry about the Old Kingdom. Time is frozen for her there. The same as it is for you.

Oh.

[ Right. Somewhere to stay. No, one thing at a time. ]

Time frozen? How do you know?

People have been sent home, as the guide mentioned. And returned. Its happened very, very often here.

[Rei hoped that was the case at least, otherwise...her world was doomed. She'd taken it on faith]

You needn't worry. Are you a Charter Mage, like Sabriel?

[Rei avoids the usual honorific, not wanting to throw Lirael off]

I am, yes.

[ That much couldn't hurt to admit. ]

Then you will definitely want to speak to her.

Would you like help finding your way into town? I'd be happy to show you the way.

Someone's coming, thank you.

But... we should meet?

[ Seeing as how you live with Sabriel and all. ]

Of course we should.

I will wait for you at the fountain. When you are ready, I will be there, wearing a red dress so you might find me better.

[She goes off to wait, whenever Lirael is ready]

[ After whatever amount of time it takes for Tsuzuki to find her, get her to town and maybe for her to eat something quick, she does come to the fountain, approaching the girl in the red dress. ]

Excuse me... are you Rei Hino?

[Rei turns and looks, smiling warmly at the girl. Her Charter Mark is plainly visible now, a reminder of both the Shift and of Sabriel's closeness to her.]

I am. You must be Lirael-san?

[ Oh, a Charter Mark! It almost makes her smile to see it. ]

I'm Lirael.

[ San? ]

[Rei stands, and bows formally, stiff kneed, still smiling.]

Its very nice to meet you, Lirael-san. I'm sorry for the strangeness of it all, though. Luceti is a very odd place.

[ Lirael sort of bends her head a little, unsure how to respond. ]

It... certainly seems like it. It's nice to meet you too.

[ You know, apart from the whole being abducted thing. ]

Undoubtedly. I wish that circumstances for our meeting could be better.

[The girl smiles, Lirael looks a little older than her, like Sabriel, but not much. She'd taken the time to check and see who else had spoken to Lirael, and was happy to note it was her friend Tsuzuki. The warnings left by about the god Loki, as well as the presence of vampires in the enclosure had left her significantly more paranoid.]

Do you have any questions that Tsuzuki-san didn't answer?

[ Lirael smiles back as best as she can. ]

I think... I'd really like to see the Q-- Sabriel.

[What had she stopped herself from saying?]

Of course. Sabriel-chan will be delighted. Follow me.

[She starts off, meandering easily towards House 3]

If you haven't already, you'd be most welcome to stay with us as long as you want. I know Ami-chan won't mind, either.

[ This is Lirael trying to keep a look of INTENSE RELIEF off her face. ]
